Welcome to Telluride Intermediate School
"This institution is an equal opportunity provider."

August 8, 2018

Dear Telluride Intermediate School Families,

I am so excited for this school year to begin, and I can’t wait to get to know our students and support them in their education in every way.  It is an honor to serve as the TIS Principal.  Telluride is an exceptional place, and TIS is dedicated to providing the finest education for our students in a nurturing environment.  To quote Brene Brown, “We want to learn, and we want to inspire.  We are hardwired for connection, curiosity and engagement.”

We are going to have a wonderful year together.

This year, with the shift of our academic calendar, students will begin school on Wednesday, August 21st

I know everyone is eager to get into the building to set up lockers and cubbies.  We will have an opportunity for families to visit the Intermediate School on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 20th from 2:00 to 3:00 PM so families can drop off school supplies and locate classrooms.  If your child will have a locker this year, Shelley will be sending you their locker number and combination.  Please make sure your child brings this information with them so they can access it!

On September 12th there will be an official Open House, which will provide an opportunity for families to talk with teachers and explore the building.  There will be sign up sheets so that you can schedule your child’s Conferences for the year.  These will be outside your child’s classroom.

We are fortunate to have incredible teachers here in the Telluride School District and I’ve included a full list of TIS teachers at the bottom of this letter.  We are pleased to continue to offer strong core curriculum.  In addition, students experience an amazing array of specials including Physical Education, Music, Art, Library, and Drama or Spanish.

All students at TIS receive a school issued iPad.  Through this 1:1 iPad initiative, teachers integrate technology into instruction in meaningful ways that enhance educational opportunities.  We utilize Schoology as an educational tool and as a means to communicate with students and teachers.  Please look for more information from your child’s teacher or from Christopher Earthtree, our TIS Technology Coach, on how you can log into and interact with Schoology.

A little more information regarding school procedures:

  • Each day the first bell rings at 8:10 and school begins at 8:15. If students arrive early, they are to wait in a designated area where a duty teacher is present or play on the playground.
  • School ends at 3:15 each day.  If you will be picking your student up after school, we ask that you wait outside rather than congregating in the hallways.  Keeping the hallways clear of adults at the end of the school day helps us maintain building security as well as allows teachers to conclude the day with minimal distractions.
  • The Tuesday Early Release program will continue this year.  Every Tuesday [with the exception of Ski PE weeks] school will release at 1:55 and buses will run at that time.
  • On the first day of school we will begin with a whole school assembly in the TIS gym at 8:15. Prior to going to your student’s classroom or locker, please proceed to the gym for this all-school gathering.
  • Student attendance throughout the school year is of utmost importance to your child’s education.  We ask that you make every effort to minimize student absences.

Please take time to read the Parent/Student Handbook for essential information.  This Handbook [located on the district website, TIS homepage] details many important policies of Telluride Intermediate School including general expectations for students and parents and the Technology Acceptable Use Agreement.  Shelley will be sending you a brief registration mailing prior to the start of school.  This mailing will include your household demographic page (please edit where needed), Handbook signature page, your student’s classroom teacher assignments, locker assignments, and lunch ID number.  We ask that you take care of all registration paperwork and iPad fee payment by August 21, the first day of school.

You will also be receiving a courtesy email from Shelley containing other pertinent information such as bus schedules, school calendar, lunch menu, insurance applications, Free/Reduced Lunch application, etc.  Remember, these items are located on the TIS Website and at the TIS Office.

Thank you so much for your warm welcome and support.  Education is a collaboration between families, the school, and the community.  Together we will create the optimal learning environment for our students.

Welcome to TIS, Miners!

Kindest regards,
